From Pizza and Beer to Professional Move Management

Before I started working for the Move Makers, I was unaware of all that needed to happen to make a successful move. I’d only moved a couple of times, and had leaned heavily on the help of family and friends. My wife and I had self-packed things into boxes, had called upon the moving gang with promises of pizza and beer when the job was done, and rented a U-Haul. What could go wrong? (Oh yes, not looking at the weather forecast and moving on that one snowy day in March–as well as not realizing how big that U-Haul truck was and sideswiping the in-laws’ car. Good thing they are forgiving of their son-in-law.)

That spontaneous attitude is all well and good when you’re a childless couple in your thirties, who have yet to accumulate both children and masses of things. But it’s a different story once you’re established and have been settled in a house for decades. You still need a team to help you, but maybe it’s not the guys in their thirties who’ll do anything for a pizza. Having seen how complicated a move can be, I recommend engaging a professional team to lead you through the process. They’ll help you think about all the things you haven’t even imagined could be a part of a moving process.

Here’s a list of things you need to factor into a successful move:

1. A little decision-making before moving can save money on moving day

Think of what goes into a move. Packing supplies. Hours of labor spent moving boxes. Unpacking the boxes. What if you have so much stuff that you need to rent a storage unit? The rule of thumb is to reduce what you have before you move. (If you want a refresher course on how to proceed read my post from July 2025 with professional organizer, Jill Viglione.)

2. Engage the services of a Move Management team

Have you thought through what the actual move is going to look like? A move management company like The Move Makers will help figure out how your furniture will fit into your new space. In fact, we’ll measure your new space and create a floor plan to make sure that there’s room for your dining table, armchairs, and china cabinet–or, if there isn’t, come up with acceptable solutions.

3. Move managers can help if there are any surprises

You’ve heard the saying that “even the best laid plans can go awry.” Don’t be like me and head out into the snowstorm. If you have a move management team supervising the move, we can help if there are delays or unforeseen issues.

4. Moving isn’t just a one-day thing

In your new space, once the boxes are unpacked, decisions have to be made. Pictures and mirrors have to be hung, electronics have to be set-up, and sometimes things that have been moved just don’t fit into a new space. A move management team can help with all of this and bring peace of mind to a project.

A successful move is about much more than getting your belongings from Point A to Point B. It’s about making good decisions before moving day, having a plan when the unexpected happens, and making sure your new home feels like home once the boxes are gone. And while pizza and beer may still be part of the moving experience, these days I’m a firm believer in adding a little professional help to the recipe.

The right move management team can turn a daunting move into a manageable—and even enjoyable—next chapter. If you’re planning a move, contact The Move Makers today at (503) 744-0826. We’re happy to help you with making a fresh start somewhere new.
