Eco-Friendly Packing Hacks for Sustainable Moves

At The Move Makers, we are mindful of sustainable practices. We try to reuse and recycle as much as possible, and we also encourage clients to pack as much as they themselves want. When we count up the boxes we use during the move, we make a special tally of those boxes labeled “Packed by Owner.” Our philosophy is always to save you time, money, and also save the planet.

(In fact, we are always experimenting with best practices, and are currently testing labels that use less tape, as well as plastic bins in which we’ll pack plates, mugs, bowls and other heavy fragile kitchen items that can be packed and unpacked the same week, saving on cardboard boxes.

When packing your own boxes, here are some tips:

1. Use What You Already Have

Before purchasing new packing materials, look around your home for items that can double as packing supplies. Towels, blankets, bedsheets, and even clothing can be used to wrap fragile items, reducing the need for bubble wrap and plastic wrap. Suitcases, backpacks, and tote bags can replace cardboard boxes for transporting smaller belongings.

2. Opt for Reusable Containers

Instead of traditional cardboard boxes, consider using reusable plastic bins, which are sturdier and can be repurposed for storage after your move. Some moving companies even offer rentable moving boxes, eliminating waste altogether.

3. Source Second-Hand Boxes

If you do need cardboard boxes, try sourcing them from local stores, online marketplaces, or community groups. Many businesses receive frequent shipments and are happy to give away their used boxes. Just be sure to choose sturdy ones that can handle the weight of your items. The integrity of the boxes should be able to hold up when movers stack them 4-5 high.

4. Downsize Responsibly

Moving is the perfect opportunity to downsize. Rather than tossing unwanted items in the trash, donate gently used goods to local charities, sell them online, or recycle materials properly. Many organizations accept old furniture, clothing, and household items for reuse. (See last month’s blog post for a list of non-profits who can help with this.)

5. Be Mindful with Packing Paper

Newspaper and clean packing paper can be repurposed as wrapping material for delicate items. After your move, recycle the paper or reuse it for future projects.

6. Unpack and Recycle

Once you arrive at your new home, be sure to recycle or reuse your packing materials. Flatten boxes and pass them along to others who might need them, compost biodegradable materials, and store reusable supplies for future use.

By incorporating these eco-friendly packing hacks, you can make your move more sustainable while keeping your belongings secure. A little extra effort goes a long way in reducing waste and protecting the planet—one move at a time!

(Of course, if you want The Move Makers to do all your packing, our highly experienced team members are more than happy to do so.)

Happy Moving!
